Anchors & Compasses

When you lose your dream, you accept any reality.

– Gbolade Ogunfowote

Imagine a ship at sea without a compass. Got it? Good. Now imagine a ship at the dock without an anchor. Got it? Good.

A compass is used for navigation, that is, giving directions, and an anchor is used to stay at a particular destination.

Humans have a navigational system within them. I’m not saying you don’t need Google Maps to get to your friend’s office, I’m saying you’ve got an innate GPS that can navigate you towards your deepest desires, goals and aspirations.

A dream serves as a compass, used for navigation in the sometimes rough waters of life, with it’s many ‘islands’ and ‘unending expanse’. As humans, we usually know what we are trying to achieve, some may call it their destiny, path in life, part in life, mission etc. but one thing is clear, we know when we are off that path, there is a dispute within us that can sometimes be hard to articulate. I know this feeling very well. Fortunately for me, anytime I try to fight it, it always wins. I’m not one to think of any dream as crazy, when I can’t comprehend the dream of others, I simply keep shut, I never dissuade them. Imagine the world without electricity or airplanes, but I’m sure the endeavors must have seemed crazy at the time. I wouldn’t be enjoying it’s benefits if not for the indefatigable dreams of the inventors.

My proposal is this: Let your dreams guide you. Develop and trust your intuition. Pursue it with all you’ve got. It would attract all that’s needed to you. Of course, educated faith can not be over-emphasized. To get the best out of your dreams, get knowledge, get understanding, get self-discipline and get mentorship.

A dream also serves as an anchor. Jack Ma once said in an interview that he gets several business proposals daily but ignores them and focuses on his business. It is very important to have anchors once you arrive at your destination. You need to know when to stop and focus. You need to understand exactly what your dream is and not get it diluted by other ‘prospects’ that derail you. This is very generic though and there are exceptions, but in most cases, it’s better to scale your dream than to venture into new ones whose passion comes from someone else or else if your dream aligns with theirs. Imagine a man who wants to find true love, and finally gets a woman of his dreams, then suddenly gets the ‘bright idea’ that some other women would also satisfy him as much or more. In most cases, he loses both his dream woman and never gets that ultimate bliss he hoped for.

My proposal is this: Understand your destination. Know when to stop drilling and start pumping. Focus on scaling your dreams and maximizing it’s results and potentials. Put down your anchor at the right time and the right place.
