Time Goes On

Time goes on, it goes on and on and on and on and on, and it don’t stop, it goes on and on and on and on and on.

-Olamide Adedeji

I checked my weight this morning. I was shocked, in the last 5 weeks, I had lost around 11kg. The number on the scale was a number I hadn’t seen in a long time. What was amazing to me was the time it took me to achieve it.

Let me give you some back story. I had been trying unsuccessfully to lose weight for some time now. Throughout last year, I tried and tried, at best, I lost 6kg in a whole year, and guess what, I gained it all right back.

What was shocking to me was that I achieved in 5 weeks with grit, sacrifice and dedication what I had struggled to achieve for over a year.

This led me to ponder about time and it’s nature.

A lot of people see time as their enemy, including me. We look at the clock and wonder where the day went. Even worse, we look at the calendar and wonder how the year flew by.

Dare I say, we don’t have a problem with time at all. The root issue is what we’ve been able to accomplish in that time. I realized quite quickly that my grouse with time all the while had stemmed from a deep dissatisfaction with how I used it.

The experience this morning taught me that time can be a friend or a foe. Time is agnostic to your habits and choices. It has just one purpose; to keep going on. What you do or don’t do with it is completely up to you.

I made a silent decision then and there to commit to making time work for me. I started thinking about all other goals I’ve had – insert learning French – and how I had made them wishes and dreams for so long and allowed time pass without employing it to achieve my goals.

I left this experience with a renewed zeal to make time my willing servant. To build myself every day, hour, minute and second. My intention is that going forward, when I look at time passed, I can point to several fruits it has borne for me. I won’t count time as lost time, I will count it as goals gained and ambitions achieved.
